Westy Self Storage Helped 91 Charities in 2009

by Holly Robinson February 19, 2010 11:24 AM

Westy Self Storage, a self-storage company based in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, announced today that its 16 self-storage sites supported 91 non-profit community organizations in 2009. In most cases, Westy donated storage space to be used for the collection of donations.

In its corporate announcement, Westy states: "In this time of economic adversity, many of us were forced to reorganize our finances....The increased demand of shelters and soup kitchens has been a hallmark of the past 18 months. As more people reach out to non-profits for assistance, the need for donations increases drastically, however as economic trauma remains in the forefront, there has been a decrease in charitable contributions....Westy...has increased their efforts this past year."

Most recently, the Chatham, NJ Westy Self Storage facility began collecting books, as it does every spring, for the annual book sale of the College Club, the Summit, New Jersey branch of the American Association of University Women. This year's sale will be held at the American Legion Hall in New Providence, from April 22-25, and will raise money to pay for college scholarships for area girls. Westy's Stamford, CT facility also began a donation drive this January, to benefit victims of the Haitian earthquake.

Other in-kind charitable contributions made by Westy in 2009 included:

  • collecting donations for families of a fire that destroyed 13 homes in Danbury, Connecticut
  • collecting women's professional clothing for Dress for Success, an organization that provides clothes for women to use while interviewing for and beginning a new job
  • collecting cash, furniture and food for the Stone Soup Food Drive organized by Christian Community Action in Norwalk, Connecticut
  • collecting food for the Connecticut Food Bank
  • collecting pet supplies for the Connecticut Humane Society
  • donating wish list items for wounded and injured troops in military hospitals for Operation Gift Cards
  • collecting holiday gifts for Kids in Crisis, which provides free help to Fairfield County, Connecticut children and families experiencing any kind of crisis
  • distributing the wish lists of underprivileged children for Operation Santa, in New York City's Bronx neighborhood, and collecting and delivering the donations
Westy also donated the use of its trucks, including gasoline and the time of a Westy staff member, to various organizations, and allowed its spacious lobbies to be used by many organizations for their fundraising events. For example, last November the Chatham, NJ Westy facility hosted "The Sweet Taste of Music," a performance by the Montclair String Quartet to benefit the Colonial Symphony.
